What Was the Inca Trail Like Before?
Between July and August from 1996 to 2001, approximately 1,500 people began the Inca Trail each day—around 1,000 tourists and 500 porters. At that time, there were few regulations in place, and many hikers camped wherever they wished, used archaeological remains as restrooms, and left litter along the trail. As a result, the Inca Trail experienced increasing pollution and damage to its unique flora and fauna.
The situation became so serious that UNESCO warned that the site could lose its World Heritage status. To protect this invaluable cultural and natural treasure, the Peruvian government introduced new Inca Trail Regulations in 2002. These regulations limit the number of daily visitors and require all hikers to travel with an authorized tour operator, helping preserve the trail for future generations.
Machu Picchu: The First Carbon Neutral Wonder
Machu Picchu, the legendary Inca citadel nestled in the Peruvian Andes, has earned recognition as the world’s first wonder to receive CarbonNeutral® certification. This achievement highlights the ongoing efforts to protect its natural environment and combat climate change.
Through innovative sustainability initiatives, Machu Picchu offers visitors a travel experience that exists in harmony with nature while promoting environmental conservation. This milestone serves as an inspiring example of responsible tourism and demonstrates how one of the world’s most iconic destinations is helping build a more sustainable future.
