Cusco Plans to Enable Homes and Campsites Ahead of Pope Leo XIV’s Visit in November

CUSCO, PERU — The Regional Management of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Gercetur) of Cusco projects that the arrival of Pope Leo XIV, scheduled for November 15, 2026, will draw more than 500,000 visitors, including domestic and international delegations. Given that the formal hotel capacity will be insufficient to absorb this massive influx over a two-to-three-day period, regional authorities are evaluating the enablement of private residences, educational institutions, and designated campsites equipped with basic utilities to address the accommodation shortage.

Papal Itinerary Details and Mass Lodging Logistics

The Supreme Pontiff will land at 10:00 a.m. at Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport and will carry out a three-hour itinerary before departing for the city of Pucallpa at 1:05 p.m.:

• Route and Liturgical Events: Initial transfer to the Sacsayhuamán Archaeological Park to deliver an address to the faithful, followed by a procession to Cusco’s Plaza Mayor to lead the Angelus prayer.
• Temporary Housing in Homes and Schools: The head of Gercetur, Rosendo Baca Palomino, stated that coordination is underway with the Regional Directorate of Education, the Archdiocese of Cusco, and local municipal governments to approve family homes and schools as temporary shelters under strict security and sanitation standards.
• Campsites for Overland Travelers: Perimeter zones will be set up for pilgrims arriving in personal or chartered vehicles. These areas must feature mobile restroom facilities, National Police security, and emergency medical stations.

To decongest Cusco’s historic center and encourage extended stays, Gercetur is boosting the promotion of alternative circuit routes focused on faith and living culture:

• Complementary Circuits: Promotion of the Sanctuary of the Lord of Huanca in the Sacred Valley and the Andean Baroque route in the South Valley (Andahuaylillas, Huaro, and Canincunca).
• Tourist Information and Accreditation: Strengthening of tourist information centers to provide guidance on verified accommodations, official transport services, and event safety protocols.
