CUSCO, PERU — The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has launched a global initiative to select the “7 Contemporary Wonders of the World,” a campaign celebrating iconic landmarks, works of art, and infrastructure constructed since the 19th century that foster cultural pride and sustainable tourism.
Peru is putting forward Apukunaq Tianan (The Abode of the Gods), a massive complex of monumental stone sculptures located in the Sencca sector of Poroy. Cultural collectives, travel agencies, and content creators across Peru have mobilized on social media to back the site’s nomination, aiming to recreate the historic national pride felt in 2007 when Machu Picchu was chosen as one of the New 7 Wonders of the Modern World.

Global Selection Timeline and Voting Stages (WTTC)
The selection process administered by the WTTC follows a key four-stage global calendar:
-
July 7, 2026: Worldwide launch and public nomination phase opens.
-
January 7, 2027: Official announcement of the longlist featuring 70 pre-selected wonders and start of global public voting.
-
April 7, 2027: Announcement of the 30 shortlisted finalists.
-
July 7, 2027: Official reveal of the 7 Contemporary Wonders of the World.

Contemporary Art, Andean Worldview, and Cusco Tourism
Created by Cusqueño artist Michael Monteagudo alongside the local community through the traditional Andean principle of ayni (reciprocal effort), Apukunaq Tianan features carved stone sculptures standing up to 10 meters high. Iconic figures include Pachamama (Mother Earth), the god Viracocha, the sacred Puma, and the protective Andean gnome—offering a modern artistic tribute to indigenous spiritual heritage.
Situated just 30 minutes from Cusco’s historic center at 3,850 meters above sea level, the site has grown into a popular destination for half-day cultural excursions, ATV tours, and scenic photography.
For travelers planning to combine visits to Cusco’s modern attractions with classic historical landmarks—especially during high-demand periods such as the upcoming projected visitor arrivals for Pope Leo XIV’s visit to Peru—advance booking is recommended. Taking a classic 1-Day Cusco City Tour provides an excellent way to acclimatize while exploring the city’s living Inca and colonial heritage.
