Peru Top Experience is proud to announce that our agency has been duly accredited by the relevant authorities as an Inca Trail operator. With years of experience and an expert team, we are prepared to offer you an unforgettable experience while exploring the ancient Inca trails. Inca Trail and Machupicchu free of Plastic

By regulation of the Peruvian government and the competent authority SERNAMP (National Service of Natural Areas Protected by the State). We adopt and share the prohibition of the use of plastic in Machupicchu and all the Inca Trail network to preserve the beauty and natural habitat of the varied flora and fauna of the Machupicchu Historic Sanctuary. At Peru Top Experience we are committed to the environment and we bring you five recommendations to reduce the use of plastic in Machupicchu and the Inca Trail following the principles of “leave no trace” by not leaving trash:

  • Bring Reusable Water Bottles: Instead of buying plastic bottled water, bring your own reusable water canteen or hydration backpack (CamelBak). Peru Top Experience provides a customized water bottle for Inca Trail expeditions.
  • Use reusable containers for food: Food handling on the Inca Trail is a quality that amazes all our visitors. We use reusable containers and biodegradable cloth bags in our Boxlunchs, significantly reducing the use of plastic bags.
  • Use reusable cloth bags: Bring your own reusable cloth bags for shopping and carrying items during your visit to Machu Picchu. Avoid using plastic bags provided by stores and vendors, especially in Aguas Calientes and Cusco.
  • Use reusable straws. Refuse single-use plastic straws when offered and bring your own reusable straw if necessary.
  • Responsible waste disposal: Our trained Inca Trail staff is tasked with differentiating solid waste and meets all waste treatment parameters in the Inca Trail Network.

What was the Inca Trail like before?

During the months of July and August from 1996 to 2001, about 1,500 people started the Inca Trail trek each day (about 1,000 tourists and 500 porters). There were no regulations and many hikers camped wherever they wanted, using the archaeological remains as bathrooms and littering along the trail. The Inca Trail was beginning to receive a lot of pollution and depredation of local flora and fauna. So much so that UNESCO threatened to strip it of its World Heritage status. To protect the site, the Peruvian government introduced new Inca Trail Regulations in 2002. These regulations restrict the number of hikers and prevent hikers from hiking the trail independently.

Machupicchu: First Carbon Neutral Wonder

Machu Picchu, the legendary Inca citadel in the Peruvian Andes, now holds the title of the first wonder to receive CarbonNeutral certification. This recognition highlights its efforts to preserve its natural environment and combat climate change. Thanks to innovative measures, Machu Picchu offers visitors a tourist experience in harmony with nature, promoting environmental conservation and serving as an inspiration for a more sustainable future.
